農曆新年即將到來，大家是否期待？你知道新年相關活動，如：大掃除、吃年夜飯、領紅包的英文該怎麼說？只要學會以下這些單字，介紹外國朋友認識農曆新年就不是問題了。 

Lunar New Year / Chinese New Year / Spring Festival  農曆新年、春節 

Lunar calendar  陰曆、農曆 

農曆新年的英文說法有許多種，其中 Lunar New Year 以及 Chinese New Year 是最常見的兩種說法。 Lunar New Year 直譯為農曆新年，而 Chinese New Year 直譯為中國的 / 華人的新年，因此對於政治議題較敏感的人來說，他們並不喜歡 Chinese New Year 此說法，因此使用 Lunar New Year 會更中立、安全一些。 

例句：Lunar New Year is a traditional festival not only in the Taiwan but also in some other countries in Aisa. 

Chinese zodiac sign  生肖 

Zodiac 的中文是「黃道帶」，the sign of the zodiac 是指「黃道十二宮」。Zodiac sign 通常只的是十二星座，而生肖由 Chinese zodiac sign 表示。 

例句：My chinese zodiac is the Ox, which means that I was born in the Year of the Ox. 

Spring cleaning  春節前的大掃除 

Cleaning 是 clean「清潔、打掃」的名詞，通常用"do”搭配只用。 

例句：I helped my mom do spring cleaning several days before the Lunar New Year’s Eve. 

Spring couplet  春聯 

Couplet 指「(長度、韻腳等相同的) 對句」，而貼春聯的英文我們會說 Put / hang up spring couplets。 

例句：Our family hangs up spring couplets every year before Lunar New Year’s Eve.  That’s one of the most iconic Lunar New Year traditions. 

Lunar New Year’s Eve / Chinese New Year’s Eve  除夕 

Eve的意思是「前夕」， Lunar New Year’s Eve 指的是農曆新年前一天，也就是除夕。「在除夕當天」我們使用的介係詞為"on”。 

例句：My family will gather together on Lunar New Year’s Eve. 

Reunion dinner  團圓飯、年夜飯 

Reunion是名詞，表示「團聚」之意；Family reunion「家庭聚會」，High school reunion「高中同學會」。 

例句：My family have a reunion dinner on Lunar New Year’s Eve every year. 

Chinese Dumpling  水餃 

Dumpling 在西方國家的認知是麵包皮包著餡料的食物，並非東方人所認知的水餃，因此與其說 Dumpling 倒不如說 Chinese Dumpling 會更加精準。 

例句：Dumplings symbolize wealth.  That’s the reason why we eat dumplings on Lunar New Year in our culture. 

Red envelope  紅包 

Lucky money  壓歲錢 

例句：One of the most cheerful thing for childern during Lunar New Year is that they receive red envelopes from their parents. 

Mahjong  麻將 

長大後沒有壓歲錢可以拿，過年最大的樂趣莫過於打麻將了。因為麻將為中華文化，因此英文採直接音譯方式表示。 

例句：Me and my friends stayed up all night playing Mahjong.
